Cognitive Rehabilitation
Recovery after brain injury requires specialized techniques (cognitive rehabilitation) to optimize the brain’s natural tendency to heal itself known as neuroplasticity. Clinician-scientists in the American College of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) have published evidence-based interventions to improve attention, memory, and executive functions. Our techniques follow the protocols outlined in ACRM’s Cognitive Rehabilitation Manual which emphasizes the importance of:
- collaborative goal setting
- using strengths to improve weaker areas of cognition
- high number of repetitions
- a transfer package to ensure skills learned in the clinic transfer to the community (i.e., home, school, work).
The field of cognitive rehabilitation has made significant advances over the last decade, and the Neuropsychology & Counseling Center has contributed to improving clinical outcomes after brain injury rehabilitation (see Clinical Research page).
